Ron was the only one who knew Harry hid the book under his pillow. But even Ron didn’t understand why. He thought it was to keep the book safe, and that was reasonable. After all, anyone who had the book held a certain power.
The truth was that Harry kept the book near at hand so he could pull it out at night, curl his body around it, and cradle it over his heart. The sharp angles and hard planes might be a poor substitute for flesh and blood, but for now it was all he had.
With the old potions text securely in his arms, Harry could imagine he was holding his prince — his Half-Blood Prince. Only then could he smile and drift away.
